Above: Robin Hood, series 2. Marian (Lucy Griffiths), will eventually attempt to taunt and tame the beast Gisborne (Richard Armitage) one time too many. Below: The death of Marian.
Above: Gisborne rides off on the back of the Sheriff's horse in a scene which unmistakably mirrors that of Marian on the back of Robin Hood's horse at the end of Series 1. Below: As Marian observes, even the remarkable Djaq (Anjali Jay) can't save her this time.

Marian withdraws the blade, knowing it will mean the end.

Patricia Driscoll reprises her Marian role in Into the Labyrinth (1980)

Patricia Driscoll reprised her role as Marian in the 1980 / 82 children’s TV series “Into the Labyrinth”. Essentially a story about three children travelling through time in search for an object of “limitless power”, one of the episodes sees them encounter an aged Robin of Loxley (Tony Wright), his wife Marian (Patricia Driscoll), and the Sheriff of Nottingham (Conrad Phillips). Driscoll was the most successful TV Maid Marian ever for her part in the long running 1950’s "Adventures of Robin Hood" (see this link), and 1980’s audiences would have instantly recognised her. Indeed, the only reason for this brief post is the long lasting affection in which she is held amongst many Robin Hood fans.

 Dear All,

I regret to say all the posts on the main Robin Hood Blog were accidentally deleted.

Because they were deleted separately from the blog I am afraid they cannot be restored,

I am sorry for this loss. I had put a lot of work into it over the years.

Robin Hood meets Little John

Above: Robin Hood Prince of Thieves. Below: Wolfshead.
Robin Hood and his fight with Little John on a bridge in Sherwood Forest is well known and documented. However, in the Robin of Sherwood television series (above) the encounter is given a brand new refreshing twist. In this version Little John (Clive Mantle) is under the spell of the evil sorcerer Baron De Belleme (Anthony Valentine), and is on a mission to kill Robin (Michael Praed). But Robin breaks the curse by removing the pentagon from Little John's skin, and thereafter Little John joins his band of outlaws. Below: Two more pictures which give a more traditional version of the tale from The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938) and The Story of Robin Hood (1952).
Below: In "Beyond Sherwood Forest" it is Marian in disguise who challenges Robin Hood on the bridge.

Above: Robin Hood and Maid Marian (Olivia de Havilland) from The Adventures of Robin Hood. This depiction of the couple persists in the public imagination to this day.
Above: Walt Disney filmed The Story of Robin Hood and gave cinema audiences the first attempt at a youthful Robin and Marian. Towards the end of the film this Maid Marian (Joan Rice) also got to wear the famous Lincoln green, complete with Robin Hood style hat, something Olivia De Havilland would never have done!
Above: Robin of Sherwood, the cult television series of the 1980's, portrayed the romantic couple in a much more sensual way with Judi Trott in the leading lady's role.

Nasir, "Robin of Sherwood".

Nasir (Mark Ryan) in Robin of Sherwood was an innovative addition to Robin Hood and his Merry Men. The concept of a black and/or Arabic outlaw has now become a firm fixture to the legend (albeit under slightly different names).

The story of Robin Hood would not be quite the same without the greedy cantankerous Friar Tuck among Robin's outlaws, the Merry Men. In recent times he has been viewed as a politically incorrect figure, when in 2006 the BBC failed to include him in their cast for "Robin Hood". Above: Richard Todd in Disney's "Story of Robin Hood".
Above: John Derek in "Rogues of Sherwood Forest" is written as the son of the Errol Flynn version below.

Above: Robin Hood swaggers into Nottingham Castle to confront both the Sheriff of Nottingham and Guy of Gisburne with one of their own deer, poached from the forest. Errol Flynn plays the famous outlaw in his own inimitable style.
Above: Robin of Sherwood depicted an England divided by poverty, superstition, and differing spiritual beliefs. Michaed Praed portrayed a more realistically youthful Robin.

Above: Robin Hood reaching the end of his days, disillusioned by King Richard's Crusades, and seeking perhaps a young man's death in one final fight against the Sheriff of Nottingham. Sean Connery gave perhaps one of his career's best performances in the role.
